Fractional CMOs: They're people. And they have opinions. But no real world experience.

Very little real world marketing experience? Want to get paid a lot? No responsibility for results?

Become a fractional CMO!

LinkedIn is absolutely rammed with people promising to produce wild results by becoming fractional CMOsBut when you look at their profiles, they almost never have any real world experience of being a CMO

And worse, sometimes they have next to no experience of being an in house marketer of any kind

I’m a huge believer in being aspirational but I also think it’s deluded to just give yourself a C-Suite title without any meaningful in house experience

Add to that the fairly sketchy premise that a fractional CMO could actually have close to the trust and political capital necessary to be effective in that role

And the absolute lack of skin in the game for fractional CMOs who can just go get another company to pay them without being responsible for their input

And it just feels like a pretty wild trend

Nothing wrong with hiring consultants to work on specific tasks for a short period of time (eg a product launch or even getting a channel up an running)But you don’t need someone with veeeerrry questionable suitability to lead your entire marketing organisation (main revenue driver in most SaaS companies) without any skin in the game
