Growth strategy report: Userlist

A teardown that analyses everything from the perspective of customer pain points is a superior kind of teardown.

A couple of weeks ago, it seemed that Userlist was everywhere I looked. Every blog. Every twitter feed. Every community.

They're all talking about Userlist, the user communication platform.

And I get it, they've done a good job building a product to compete in a busy market.

But what they've really done a great job of is their marketing – which is led by Claire Suellentrop, expert in customer centric marketing.

And if you're familiar with Claire's work, you'll not be surprised to discover that the team at Userlist appear to have a razor sharp picture of who their customer is, and what they're like.

Focus on who your customer is and what their pain points are. All good growth comes from addressing genuine customer pain points.

Great teardowns abound!

I've seen two genuinely great resources analysing the work that Userlist did on their marketing. One was a video by Ramli John. One was a lengthy article by Nicolas Merouze analysing the marketing choices they made based on customer reviews and landing pages.

Which is a, frankly, great approach.

Specifically, he identifies a few themes and then talks us through how we can apply them to our own strategies:

How to increase reviews with a customer messaging solution.
Why ready-to-use templates are crucial for onboarding.
How customers use messaging solutions.
Why live chat might sink your productivity.

Customer centric strategy

I really love how Nicolas focuses in on the customer reviews as a way of unpacking the strategy.

In fact, this strategy works so well because the best growth teams start with their customers, not their features.

Focus on who your customer is and what their pain points are.

All good growth comes from addressing genuine customer pain points.
